Netanyahu 'salutes' commandos who raided Gaza flotilla

Natanyahu tours top-security Shayetet 13 base in show of defiance against international censure of raid on Mavi Marmara

Saying "I salute you," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the headquarters on Tuesday of Israeli naval commandos who killed nine pro-Palestinian Turks aboard a Gaza-bound aid ship in May.
Netanyahu's tour of the top-security Shayetet 13 base on the coast near Haifa was a show of defiance against international censure of the raid on the converted cruise liner Mavi Marmara.

It followed testimony on Sunday from Israel's military chief, who told a state-appointed inquest into the operation that the commandos had come under pistol, knife and cudgel
attacks while boarding and fired 308 live bullets in response.
Activists from the Mavi Marmara have confirmed they resisted the Israeli boarding party but denied provoking lethal violence.
Netanyahu said the May 31 raid on the Turkish-flagged vessel, one of six ships trying to run Israel's naval blockade of the Gaza Strip, had been "crucial, essential, important and legal".
"Gaza has turned into an Iranian terror base," he said, referring to the Palestinian territory controlled by Hamas Islamists, in a speech to around 200 members of the unit.
He heaped praise on the commandos, saying they had acted "courageously, morally and with restraint".
The night-time interception on Mediterranean high seas and the ensuing bloodshed strained Israel's once-close ties with Turkey, which has demanded an apology and compensation.
A United Nations probe last month condemned the attack as unlawful and said it resulted in violations of human rights and international humanitarian law. UN jurists also said the Gaza blockade had caused a humanitarian crisis and was unlawful.
'I salute you'
Flotilla 13 commandos had been equipped with riot-dispersal gear but quickly switched to live fire during deck brawls with dozens of activists. The ship had ignored Israeli calls to stop.
Two commandos were shot and wounded and another five suffered other injuries, the navy said. In addition to the nine Turkish dead, 24 activists were hurt, many of them by gunfire.
"You acted against those who came to kill you and tried to kill you," said Netanyahu. "There is no one better than you. I salute you."
He then met some of the commandos who took part in the raid, shaking their hands on a prow-shaped veranda overlooking the craggy bay at their Atlit base. They were shadowed by bodyguards and, out to sea, a squad of commandos in a speed boat.
Bristling at Turkish and other foreign fury over the Mavi Marmara raid yet wary of international war crimes suits, Israel set up its own inquiry to help prepare its submission for a separate probe under U.N. Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon.
Interim findings from that inquest, under retired Supreme Court justice Jacob Turkel, are due out in mid-November and the final report by early 2011, a spokesman said. Another internal investigation by an Israeli ex-general is already complete.
Turkey withdrew its ambassador from Israel and cancelled joint military exercises in protest at the Mavi Marmara raid and has dismissed the Israeli inquiries as insufficient.

Only Ambulances

September Geese-

Geese are supposed to migrate from Lebanon In September. This is what once we studied at School.
This year and since Lebanon is going to be a Desert soon, The geese refused to leave up until October.
Maybe That lesson of "Geese-migration in September" should be changed to "Geese-migration in October" or Maybe it would be great if the government can start some Environmental Campaigns...

Be Mike Leigh

British director Mike Leigh

Haaretz 17/10/10

British director Mike Leigh has canceled his scheduled visit to Israel after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet approved a controversial amendment to the Citizenship Law last week requiring non-Jews to pledge allegiance to Israel as a "Jewish and democratic state."
Leigh, who last visited Israel in 1990 and has since stayed away to protest Israeli policy, was due to arrive on November 20 for a one-week stay as a guest of the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School in Jerusalem. He was scheduled to lead student workshops and meet with audience members at cinematheques. Leigh was also due to give a lecture to Palestinian colleagues at the Jenin Cinema.

In a letter addressed to school director Renen Schorr, Leigh said that he had considered canceling his trip after the raid of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla on May 31, but that the amendment to the citizenship law was the final straw.
The director of such hit films as Life Is Sweet and Career Girls wrote that he would not feel at ease visiting the country, since his arrival would be interpreted as support for the government's policy.
Leigh, who is Jewish, said that he began seriously contemplating canceling his visit after the government announced that it would resume construction in West Bank settlements. It was only after the citizenship amendment was passed that the decision to stay home was made, Leigh wrote.
He also wrote that he did not anticipate the media firestorm that would have erupted had he continued with his original plan and made the visit. Leigh added that only after a "just solution" to the Palestinian issue and the rehabilitation of Gaza would he accept an invitation to the country.
The director apologized to students and faculty at the school for the cancelation.
Leigh was born to a Jewish family and initially carried the surname "Lieberman." He last visited Israel in 1990. Since then he has refused to
return in protest of Israeli policy in the territories.
In a response letter to Leigh, Schorr wrote: "The students, teachers, artists, and various professionals who eagerly await your arrival are not the elected
Israeli government nor are they responsible for its policy. The nexus that you create by your de facto boycott between artistic and cultural bodies of work and the policy of the government that and the army is a disturbing and unfortunate generalization. We agreed that we would hold a press conference and that you could, as you see fit, express your serious reservations with Israeli policy. The reverberations of your statements would have been different had you made those statements here in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Jenin."
"It would have granted you a real opportunity to reach many hears and minds and to directly appeal to public opinion and public consciousness," Schorr wrote. "It would have allowed you to touch the future and try to change reality. Instead, you chose to remain distant."
Another British director, Ken Loach, has been vocal in his support of a cultural boycott against Israel. Last year, he withdrew his film Looking for Eric from the Melbourne International Film Festival to protest Israeli funding of another film participating in the festival.

How To evaluate Your Social Media Team?

Reuters

After two expensive and lackluster contracts with so-called “social media specialists,” Kathy Costello was ready to abandon her foray into social media.

“We hired one company that was going to set up SEO [search engine optimization] and help us with social media,” recalled Costello, the founder of KCB Accounting Solutions. “We spent close to $1,000. They wanted money up-front and a monthly retainer. I didn’t see anything tangible so we left them. I met with another group--everything they said sounded good, but I didn’t really understand what they were doing.”

As social media gains traction, small business owners are forced to keep up with trends to generate customers and drive revenue. But in a world where everyone claims to be a social media expert, how does a business owner avoid costly mistakes?

Sherrie Madia, author of “The Social Media Survival Guide” advised entrepreneurs to hire someone who understands how social media fits into your overall marketing strategy.

“People often think that creating a social media strategy is an intern’s job or they call in a student. But they are users. They are not strategists."

Costello finally found her strategist on her third attempt.

“He put me on a schedule for when to post. I realized that if I didn’t follow the schedule I wasn’t getting results,” she said. “If I post to Facebook on Monday afternoons or Friday mornings, I see that I get over 20 to 30 hits. If I post on the weekend I may get one or two hits.”

When looking to hire a social media expert, Barbara Farfan of Authentic Communications recommends business owners ask candidates the following questions:

What are you going to teach me that I don’t already know?

Business owners want to avoid a life-long relationship or dependency on theirspecialist, stressed Farfan, they aren’t going to be on your payroll forever.

Who can I contact for references?

Talk to other clients to find out what kind of results and experiences they had, this will give you a good idea of what to expect.

What is the relationship between Twitter and Google search?

Business owners want to ensure their expert is up-to-date on the latest developments. Google search, for instance, recently updated its algorithm, adding in real-time search for Twitter and blog posts. A social media expert should know this.

How can I measure the effectiveness of all this?

A social media specialist should be able to explain to a business owner in simple English what tangible results the business owner can expect.

Costello is finally seeing a return on her social media investment and it's allowing her to expand her company.

"We are getting phone calls from people requesting consultations. We never had that," she said. "We used to get clients solely from networking." Next week she plans to hire a part-time college student to take on her content updating responsibilities.

Even at the entry-level stage, the person handling Costello's social media content needs to have a certain skill set as they are the online voice of her company, the experts warn.

At Michigan State University, Derek Mehraban prepares students for careers in social media through The New Media Drivers License program. “There are four qualities that CEOs should look for in a candidate,” he said. “[The candidate needs] the ability to be social since this person has to engage your audience in conversation, training in new media marketing, an analytical understanding of numbers including how to set goals and track measurement and lastly, having a social media presence."

Employers should do a quick online search to see if prospective hires are actively using social media.

Emily Peters, director of communications at San Francisco-based Practice Fusion, recently hired her first junior social media specialist. “What really distinguished a candidate for me was if they used social media to respond to the job listing,” recalled Peters.

Business owners should also use the interview to evaluate how quickly a candidate reacts.

Dr. Priyanka Matanhelia, faculty and program coordinator for the Master’s Program in Communications at John Hopkins University, recommends business owners ask students and recent college graduates to solve a communications problem the business is currently facing.

“What is really required in the age of social media is that they should be really quick on their feet,” said Priyank, “If you are too late with social media, it can lead to a negative response.”

Causes of a horrifying crime

The nightmarish assault committed against four men in New York City earlier this month follows several other recent anti-gay attacks,

1910 OSBORNE Place sits on the kind of street in the Bronx where you'd expect to find kids playing and dogs barking--not a house of horrors in which three young men endured hours of torture, all for the "crime" of having sex with other men.

Early Sunday morning on October 3 marked the beginning of an agonizing two-day nightmare for four men assaulted by a group calling itself the "Latin King Goonies." The group had seen a new 17-year-old recruit with a 30-year-old man they knew was gay. Nine of the Goonies allegedly accosted, beat and tortured the teenager, plus three other men at various times through Monday.

The assaults were gruesome. First, the Goonies dragged the 17-year-old suspected of being gay into a vacant Osborne Place apartment, where they made him strip, sliced him with a box cutter and violated his rectum with a plunger handle--yelling, "Is it true you're a faggot? Do you like this?"

They also grabbed and interrogated another 17-year-old man about the 30-year-old, and then beat him. One of the victims had to choose between being beaten with a pipe or a bat.

The teenagers were tortured into admitting to having sex with the man. The first one was let go, battered and bruised. The second was held in anticipation of the 30-year-old's arrival.

Next, the Goonies lured the 30-year-old to the apartment with the promise of a party, having him bring along 10 cans of caffeinated malt liquor--double the size and alcohol content of regular beer--which they later forced him to drink. The suspects tied up the man and made the remaining teenager hit him in the face and burn his genitals with a lit cigarette, while they joined in the beating, shouting anti-gay slurs.

The 30-year-old's beating lasted for several hours. On top of it all, they whipped him with a chain and violated him with a small baseball bat.

Finally, the Goonies attacked the man's older brother at the home the two shared, throwing a blanket over him, beating him and demanding money. They got his younger brother to tell him over the phone that the Goonies had kidnapped him and were holding him captive. The 30-year-old was made to tell his brother, "Give them the money"--referring to $1,000 the two kept in the house.

The older brother complied, and his large-screen TV and debit cards were stolen as well. He was tied up with tape and rope and shoved under a bed, barely able to breathe. "I thought I was going to die," he told a neighbor after freeing himself three hours later.

Eventually, the 30-year-old was dumped outside the brothers' home. He was found passed out on a landing, unable to explain what had happened until the next day.

THIS PROLONGED nightmare of brutality follows two other recent gay-bashing attacks in New York, both in areas heavily frequented by LGBT people.

On October 3, a man was attacked by two men in the bathroom of the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan, a bar that sits at the site of the LGBT riot that kicked off the gay rights movement in 1969. One of the attackers punched the victim in the face, tackled him to the ground and beat him, while the other blocked the door.

A couple days later, there was another attack, this time in Chelsea--five men assaulted several gay men who were hugging and kissing good night. The attackers told the men to go home, saying, "This is our neighborhood." They then punched the victims and tossed a metal garbage can into one's head.

Meanwhile, around the country, six young men are known to have ended their lives as a result of homophobic bullying in just the past few weeks. One was Tyler Clementi, a college student who committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge after his roommate secretly recorded his sexual encounter with a man in their dorm room and streamed it on the Internet. Tyler's story has turned the national spotlight on youth suicide like never before.

As horrifying as these deaths and violent acts are, they don't occur in a vacuum. Anti-LGBT bigotry from voices of authority, including political leaders of both mainstream parties, creates a climate in which teenagers in the Bronx can feel justified in victimizing and torturing men they suspect of being gay.

Public opinion polls have shown growing numbers of people in favor of LGBT equality. But that hasn't stopped right-wingers from spewing homophobia and hate.

For example, right after Tyler Clementi's suicide, the second-highest leader of the Mormon Church, Boyd Packer, spoke out against same-sex attraction as "impure and unnatural." He added that same-sex unions are morally wrong and "against God's law and nature."

And just a week after the horrifying anti-gay attack in the Bronx, the Republican Party's candidate for New York governor, Carl Paladino, marked National Coming Out Day by declaring that he doesn't want children "brainwashed into thinking homosexuality" is acceptable.

"I didn't march in the Gay Pride parade this year. My opponent did," Paladino declared during a campaign stop in Brooklyn, a dozen or so miles away from the building at 1910 Osborne Place. "That's not the example that we should be showing our children, and certainly not in our schools."

Democrats raked Paladino over the coals for his outrageous comments. But their own failure to make an uncompromising commitment to LGBT equality contributes to an atmosphere that gives confidence to open bigots.

After all, Barack Obama has failed to follow through on his promise to oppose the Defense of Marriage Act. In fact, his Justice Department went to court last year to defend that anti-LGBT law, and in the process compared same-sex marriage with incest and pedophilia. Obama has dragged his feet on repealing the "don't ask, don't tell" policy in the military, and Democrats continue to resist adding specific protections for transgender people to the Employment Non-Discrimination Act that would outlaw employment discrimination based on sexual identity.

What kind of message does it send when the party that claims to stand up for LGBT rights won't even do so?

People who agree with the voices of authority that perpetuate bigotry and discrimination think they've been given permission to destroy the lives of LGBT people, many of whom have barely gotten a start in life.

But the spread of vigils and demonstrations across the country in support of these victims of hate is encouraging. There is still much work to do.

Nasty Republican, Cheap Ad

No doubt that Pat Quinn is a nasty Republican (just like all republicans) but no doubt that is another cheap election campaign from the democrats!

Israel's loyalty oath: Discriminatory by design

New pledge requires future citizens declare their loyalty to an ideology, one intended to exclude Palestinians

There are two narratives at work in Israel that have a bearing on the capacity of its leaders to negotiate the creation of an independent Palestinian state next to it. The first is official and intended for external consumption. It is the one that claims Israel is ready to sit down with the Palestinians in direct talks without preconditions and Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, should not have wasted so much of the 10 month partial freeze on settlement building before he did so. On Saturday, America was given another month by the Arab League to persuade Binyamin Netanyahu's government to halt settlement building, the bare minimum required for talks to continue.
There is however a second narrative, which could be called business as usual, and it has nothing to do with occupation, Iran's nuclear programme, Hizbullah's rocket arsenal, or any threat which could be called existential. This was evident in all its inglory yesterday when the Israeli cabinet approved a measure requiring candidates for Israeli citizenship to pledge loyalty to "the state of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state". The naturalisation oath would not apply to Jews, who are granted automatic citizenship under the law of return, so it is, by definition, discriminatory. The existing text binds individuals to declare their loyalty to the state of Israel. The new version requires future citizens to declare their loyalty not just to a state but an ideology, one specifically designed to exclude one fifth of its citizens who see themselves as Palestinian.
Palestinian Israeli leaders have described this proposal as racist. Palestinian Israeli citizens do not have to take this oath, but their partners seeking naturalisation do. Neither could agree with Israel's characterisation of itself as a Jewish state. It could be a state of Jews and all its citizens, but never a Jewish state. Nor is this the only bill around. There are 20 others in the slipstream that have a similar effect: there is a loyalty law for Knesset members and for film crews; there are bills that make it a criminal offence to deny the existence of Israel; that penalise the mourning of Nakba Day; that force any group financed by a foreign nation to report each contribution; and a bill to deny ethnic minorities' access to Jewish settlements. The authors of these proposals not only intend to create a state ideology but to police it.
The question that lies behind this is why, and why now? Are these the actions of a nation prepared to make a historical compromise, end occupation and live in peace with its neighbourhood? If they are and we are all wildly misinterpreting this, why alienate and incite the very people who could have helped by their example bring a historic settlement about, people who have accepted the existence of Israel, who have never in their history taken up arms against it? This applies to Christian as well as Muslim. The opposite is happening. The Palestinian Israeli experience of inequality and discrimination only promotes the view that being a minority in a state with a Jewish majority is rapidly becoming untenable.
The Labour minorities minister Avishay Braverman described the loyalty oath yesterday as a terrible mistake. But it is surely more that. Mistake implies miscalculation, and there is calculation in this. It seeks to pre-empt negotiation on the third core issue after borders and the division of Jerusalem – the right of return of Palestinian refugees to sovereign Israeli territory. Abbas happens to be one of those refugees. If Netanyahu refuses to extend the settlement freeze, Abbas, the most pliant Palestinian negotiator Israel is likely to encounter, has threatened to resign, dissolve the Palestinian authority or seek US and UN recognition for a future Palestinian state. Netanyahu is only hastening the day when this happens and in one sense, he is doing the world a service. Future citizens will be swearing loyalty to a state that can not make peace.

Driving Lessons Needed!

David Be'eri, a right wing Israeli terrorist drove his car into 2 Palestinian kids, one of who is in a moderate condition at the hospital. David The Terrorist is believed to have done this not because the Palestinian kids hurled him with stones as he was driving, but because his son was sitting next to him and he was teaching him how to drive in Palestinian neighborhoods.
